Department Chairman: Daniel Alemayehu, M. Sc. techsouth.aau@telecom.net.et

Introduction
The Department of Architecture and Urban Planning was established in 1963. It is one of the Departments in the Faculty of Technology of the Addis Ababa University offering a 5-year formal education in the field of Architecture and Urban Planning. It is located at the Technology Faculty Southern Campus together with the departments of Building Technology and Material Research and Testing.
Students at the Department have opportunity to become well acquainted with a wide range of major contemporary design approaches. The Department does not seek to impose any single design philosophy, but rather encourages students to rediscover the process of design and is open for individual exploration.

Graduates
The first architecture graduates came out 1967. At present the Department admits an average of 30 students each year. The architectural practice in the country has now successfully been taken over by our graduates. Today nearly all the consultants and contractors in the country are native Ethiopians.

Curricula
Right from the inception, the Department was intended to be a design-oriented school. Even urban planning courses were made to be studio based than paper-research oriented.
Although course descriptions evolved and some adjustments have been made through the years, the major courses remained basically the same. The titles of some courses have changed. Courses like Sanitary, Electrical Installation, Acoustics and Illumination were later grouped under a general title Architectural Science already during the first revision in 1970. The same has been done to the Structural Engineering courses, which was later named as Theory and Design of Structures. Current courses include such courses as Computer Aided Design.
