About the Department

The Department of Building Technology is part of the AAU, Faculty of Technology. It is located at the Southern Campus. It conducts a three-year course leading to an advanced diploma in building technology and has an average annual intake of eighty students. The department runs also (evening) continuing education program, in the same filed of study. The average intake of this program is about 100 students and it takes 5 years for the completion of the course.

Brief History  

• The Department of Building Technology was founded in 1954 as part of the Ethio -Swedish Institute of Building Technology (ESIBT) in the campus still customarily known as " The Building College." 
• ESIBT commenced as a complete institute conducting education, research and testing in the field of building technology. 
• It started by giving a three-year diploma in building technology and later in 1957 expanded its program to a four- year B.Sc. degree in the same field . But program revision in 1962 changed it back to the three - year diploma program.
• ESIBT became part of the AAU, Faculty of technology in 1969 following an overall reorganization of the higher-level education system. Since then the college has consisted of the Department of Building Technology, the Materials Testing and Research Department and the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning. All share the premises of the Building College and are known together as the Faculty of Technology - South.

Objectives 

• The main objectives of the department are to: 
• train in its regular and extension programs, intermediate-level engineers who fill in the gap between highly qualified engineers and skilled laborers of the construction industry;  
• undertake research works on improving construction methods and materials relevant to the country's socio-economic conditions; 
• render consultation services on matters pertaining to construction methods, materials and maintenance of structures; 
• provide short-term training programs on basic skills appropriate to the building industry.

Future Plans

• To launch a B.Sc. degree program in the field of Building technology and construction management in the near future.
• To undertake research works on areas related to construction materials, methods of construction and supervision, and planning principles appropriate to indigenous problems.

Facilities and Resources 

Library:

The Department shares with the other departments in the campus a library that can accommodate 650 users.  

Workshops:

The Department has workshop facilities that provide practical training in basic setting out, masonry, carpentry, plumbing and electrical works.  

Computer center: this recently provided facility gives instructional service to the Departments of Building Technology, Architecture and Urban Planning. It is also used by the staff of all departments. 

Support facilities: The testing facilities of the Materials Research and Testing Department are used intermittently for demonstration purposes to reinforce the acquisition of a deeper understanding of the properties of construction materials and soils. 

Sport facilities: The department shares different sport facilities in the compound with the other departments. The facilities include: a football field, two tennis courts, one out-dead multi-purpose field and one swimming pool. Indoor games like table-tennis and chase are also available.
