ETC shall constantly strive and work unceasingly to be an internationally recognized, agile, strong and vibrant world-class ICT infrastructure and telecom services provider” ETC’s vision statement as it has been spelt out in the Strategic plan.
In response to the Corporation’s commitment for overall development of the country in general and nationwide ICT development program in particular and addressing its visions and strategic objectives, ETC has been accelerating its Broadband network infrastructure development using state of the art and cutting edge technologies. ETC, using its Broadband multimedia network infrastructure which is based on powerful and proven platforms to support customer business growth, has introduced ultra scalable MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) based IP VPN (Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network) technology with the industry’s most extensive portfolio of managed network services. This network is unique in Africa in its design and technology make-up.
This technology shall enable ETC to provide customers with reliable, flexible, scalable, secure, cost effective and fully managed IP VPN solution with an industry-leading differentiated Quality of Service (QoS) or Classes of Services (COS); suitable for companies looking for high performance any-to-any connectivity between geographically dispersed local area networks within a company (Intranet Solution) or global and nationwide area networks between different companies (Extranet solution) and also enables customers to get data, video and voice services over a single IP infrastructure.
This also allows companies to extend the power of their central networks to distributed locations nationally and internationally. This effectively meets the new and diversified needs for network-based ICT solutions of its customers such as Government and Non-Governmental organizations, private, financial, higher academic or educational, international Institutes and Residential for Broadband services. That means this network is a very clear demonstration of ETC’s commitment to providing nation wide integrated and managed broadband voice, data and video services. By relying on ETC to look after their communications infrastructure, customers will be able to concentrate on delivering better service and value to their own customers.
The network in its coverage shall connect key business centers and higher institutes nation wide where there is terrestrial infrastructure in place. The network utilizes Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) using copper, Broadband Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) only in Addis and Low Density Wireless Access Solutions (LDWA) in selected regional towns. Using these technologies customers can get data speed ranges of up to 8Mbps with ADSL, 30Mbps with FWA and 11Mbps with LDWA. The infrastructure can also easily accommodate services that will demand speeds in Gigabits/sec. Since advanced telecom service providers in the world use IP VPN solution predominantly, our customers can also internationally communicate more effectively and cost effectively with their partners and suppliers worldwide. This can also be considered as the best solution in helping customers to achieve their business strategic objectives.
MPLS VPN SERVICE
ETC, as a means to integrate its various offerings, such as Internet, Extranet and Internet access over a single network infrastructure, is implementing Multi protocol Label Switch (MPLS) enabled backbone.
Enterprise or corporate customers are no longer contending to deal with separate networks for voice, data, and video conferencing. They want guaranteed levels of service in the form of QoS utilizing multiple classes of service for voice, data, and video. Corporate customers have also realized the advantage of outsourcing their IP network services and consolidation of data, voice and video services. They want services with end to end and guaranteed quality of service (QoS).
The MPLS VPN (Virtual Private Network) is rapidly becoming the foundation for the delivery of consolidated data, voice and video services. Business oriented services such as e-commerce application hosting, and different multimedia applications are also possible through this MPLS backbone.
In enterprises, network, IP-based Intranet have fundamentally changed the way companies conduct their business. Companies are moving their business applications to their Intranet to extend over a wide-area network. Companies are also embracing the needs of their customers, suppliers, and partners by using Extranets (an Intranet that encompasses multiple businesses). With Extranets, companies can reduce business costs by facilitating supply chain automation, electronic data exchange, and other forms of network commerce. To provide advantage of this business opportunity for the business oriented society, ETC, as mentioned above, is implementing MPLS VPN infrastructure that delivers private network services to businesses over the shared MPLS backbone, which is the technology of choice for building stable, secure, and scalable VPNs.

MPLS VPNs offer the same level of security as connection oriented VPNs. Packets from one VPN do not cross in to other VPN. Security is provided at the edge of the provider network ensuring that packets received from a customer are placed on the correct VPN.
