Ato Amare Amsalu Chief Executive Officer of ETC |
First of all, I would like to express my best wish to all of you a happy Ethiopian New Year on behalf of the Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation /ETC/ and on my own behalf. I also wish you a successful year in all your working life so that you would realize the grand vision of the corporation
What makes ETC’s get- to-gather ceremony of this year special is its historic occasion that marks the end of the second Ethiopian Millennium and the beginning of the third Ethiopian Millennium making Ethiopia unique from the rest of the world in its calendar, and above all, this is a moment of great opportunity for us to review the last Millennium’s performance and to overhaul our country‘s image of poverty and backwardness through striving for its renaissance and through exerting unreserved efforts for the maximum attainment of the overall development of the country.
Dear employees of the corporation!
It is a noble fact that our country has started to benefit from the telecom services just few years after the technology had been invented. This time again, the country is exerting a lot of efforts to keep on delivering telecom services through the sole telecom operator that has been embarking upon expanding diverse telecom service infrastructures including the introduction of state-of-the-art technologies of the day. Therefore, we pay a great tribute to the former and the present incumbent employees of the corporation for their outstanding commitment geared towards the development of the telecom industry and growth of the corporation to its current level.
Thus, the results achieved in the development of telecommunication sector, specially in the introduction of new telecom services and expansion of service coverage or telephone density in the last few years, show the Corporation’s great stride to the right direction towards realizing the Corporation’s vision of “creating an information affluent Ethiopian society where all our people have access to information infrastructure on equitable basis”. To mention but a few as a case in point is that the Corporation undertook various huge telecom service expansion projects across the country during the last Ethiopian budget year and as a result, the number of fixed telephone subscriber has grown to 913, 821, mobile phone customers to over 1,948, 000, and rural telecom service subscriber Kebeles/centers to 11,086. Moreover, the Corporation has already introduced and availed state–of-the- art telecom technologies such as WCDMA mobile service and CDMA service to customers in Addis Ababa.
Honorable community members of the Corporation!
It is a tangible fact that our corporation has registered encouraging results in the telecom sector as per the great national responsibility vested on our sole telecom operator to enhance the information communication technology. However, to cope with the swift change and ever growing demand in the information communication technology, still a lot of remained tasks lay ahead of us through bringing about organizational transformation with full determination, commitment and diligence to access the telecom technology to customers in a more coordinated and integrated way.
Thus, I have full confidence that ETC management and employees would work hand in hand harmoniously in an organized and integrated manner to timely undertake and finalize huge telecom projects within the scheduled time so as to make the infrastructure ready for the service sales with a view to raising the Corporation’s revenue much higher than ever before giving high attention with diligence to ensure quality of service delivery and bringing about organizational transformation at large.
Regarding the service expansion endeavors in the new Ethiopian fiscal year, the Corporation has planed to avail 6 million mobile phone, 500,000 fixed line telephone, 182,000 value added services and 50,000 additional internet network capacity as well as sign mobile roaming agreements with 60 additional telecom operators across the globe. With respect to universal access services, the Corporation has planned to avail 50,000 capacity public phone throughout the country as well as to expand rural telecom services in the remaining 8,000 kebles/ceneters that had been never reached by telecom infrastructures before. During the same budget year, internet service will be availed to rural areas that have already been accessed to telephone infrastructures. In addition, based on its strategic planning, the Corporation would focus on the following directions during 2001 Ethiopian budget year.
- Enable the management staff and the employees of the Corporation to be ready for transformation in compliance with the ongoing corporate reform program and the Next Generation Network Project undertakings.
- Perform intensive corporate reform works in service delivery, marketing and business development, finance and human resource development areas.
- Exhaustively utilize idle resources of the Corporation in various ways and reduce the Corporation’s cost by controlling unnecessary material purchases;
- Undertake large scale sales activities in fixed and mobile telephone services through finalizing and commissioning the second phase of vendor financing projects which have already been commenced in 2000 EFY;
- Lay the foundation to ensure network security and protect illegal network application;
- Formulate sound marketing strategies so as to highly boost service sales; and
- Raise the total revenue of the Corporation to 10.32 billion Birr.
Dear community members of the Corporation!
In order to successfully attain the aforementioned huge targets of the Corporation, each employee as well as heads of the working units of the Corporation at various levels, should exert unreserved effort to discharge their duties and responsibilities vested upon them with sense of strong work initiative, full responsibility and integrity as well as with the feeling of ownership to the given task through commitment and determination. Apart from this, each of the Corporation’s employee has to actively take part in the success of the Corporation’s target with a new spirit and initiative being empowered with new working culture while, at the same time, striving to give up an obsolete working culture and attitude.
Honorable employees and working units’ heads!
It is well known that HIV/AIDS causes tremendous social and economic crisis by exposing many children to become orphans and elderly people remain without supporters as well as by adversely affecting productive young citizens in their early age. Despite the ongoing nationwide efforts to minimize the problems, HIV/AIDS has been kept on bringing adverse impacts on the national development endeavors geared towards alleviating poverty in the country.
Thus, cognizant of the fact that the Corporation has a strong belief in valuing its workforce, which are its great asset, and in protecting their health, I would like to call upon all the Corporation’s community members to safeguard themselves from this deadly disease and to support the HIV/AIDS victims and their family members so as to live up to our shared responsibility as citizens.
Honorable management staff and employees!
Finally, I would like to call upon all ETC community members to do their level best so as to successfully implement the corporate-wide huge targets in this Ethiopian budget year by efficiently discharging their given duties and to further strengthen the telecom sector which has a vital role in the nation’s social and economic development by working hand in hand harmoniously stimulated with new working spirit.
Once again, I wish you all a happy and prosperous new year.
I thank you!
